The Q-SPD SD series is now the most popular of all Q-SPD drive models. It began life as the ideal alternative to stern legs offering a virtually maintenance free solution to the worlds most maintained propulsion system, stern legs. In addition to low maintenance, the SD Drive has the ability to transmit a lot more engine power than most commercially available stern legs. Today, the Q-SPD SD Series is available in three base models for power options from 200hp to over 1200hp.

Due to the advanced propeller design, a unique ventilation system, integral thrust bearing and the evolution of the unique twin side rudders, Q-SPD SD Drives are smoother and quieter than any other surface drive. In fact, reports claim smoother than conventional, yet they offer all the performance advantages of a ventilated propeller. The methods of composite manufacture used ensure the SD Drive is about half the weight of most other surface drives, and just as, or more, robust. The twin rudders also offer better tracking, steering and maneuverability at all speeds.

By design the Q-SPD SD drives are compact in length, which means they do not impose on waterline length like other surface drive systems. They offer shallower draft than other propulsion options, and can be used in single and twin applications and are suited to most hull forms including displacement catamarans.

The standard SD system is adjustable or manually trimmable, which allows the propeller trim to be adjusted and set at sea trials thus allowing the optimum running immersion of the propeller to be found. If adjustability is not required, for example in production boats where they will all be the same, then a Direct Drive version offers a fixed shaft which can be set at manufacture time from 4 to 8 degrees. The direct drive version is offered with either an integrated or remote mounted thrust bearing, or can be direct coupled to the marine transmission.

The Q-SPD SD is delivered as a completely assembled system that mounts directly to the transom. The smaller models SD100 and SD150 are designed for 12 degree transoms so they are a perfect stern leg alternative. The larger SD300 mounts to a 6 degree transom. Transom wedges can be supplied for different transom angles. Q-SPD SD Drives should also be considered as an alternative to conventional underwater shafts and propellers, where performance and efficiencies can be increased and draft reduced.
